Food logging fails when it takes too long. If a client has to search, pick and weigh the same breakfast every morning, they stop by week three. Two features in the Trainzilla client app attack that friction: barcode scanning and saved meals.
Barcode scanning
- In the food log, the client opens the scanner and points the camera at a packaged product's barcode.
- The app looks the product up and shows its calories and macros.
- The client sets the servings and logs it.
Lookups check the client's own saved foods first, then public food databases (USDA branded foods and Open Food Facts). Coverage varies by country and brand. If a product is not found, the client can still search by name or enter it manually, and they can save a barcode food they add themselves so it is found next time.
Saved meals
A saved meal combines several foods into one entry the client can re-log in a tap: yoghurt plus berries plus granola, or a standard post-training shake. The client builds it once, names it, and finds it under My meals.
What this means for your coaching
- Higher logging consistency means better data for your weekly review.
- You can tell clients to save the meals they repeat. Most people eat the same ten meals.
- You still control the targets. Logging features do not change the plan you assign.
Coach-side tools that go with it
If you build meal plans, let clients swap meals without breaking their macros, and use alternatives for single meal slots so clients can choose between options you approved.
Honest limits
- Barcode data is crowd-sourced or public data, so occasional values will be wrong. Ask clients to check the label if something looks off.
- The client needs an up-to-date app to use scanning.
